YO SOLO: THE UNSUNG HERO SINGS

The opera YO SOLO: THE UNSUNG HERO SINGS is based on the real-life Spanish hero, Bernardo de Galvez. He fought Apaches in Texas, the Moors in Africa, the Portuguese in Europe, and the British all around the Gulf of Mexico. He was a crucial contributor to American independence, the namesake of Galveston.

The opera was commissioned by the order of the Granaderos y Damas de Galvez, who work to educate people about Spain’s contribution to our war for independence, namely by bringing attention to the valiant feats of Bernardo de Galvez.

A song cycle based on The Gathering, compiled by author Jeannine Otis from the writings of incarcerated youth. The issues of incarceration, marginalisation and victimisation, which they write about, tragically persist today. Also, a special tribute to victims of gun violence, including those of Sandy Hook. The work was commissioned by New York Baritone Anthony Turner, who is also the performer.

Bryant Lagoon Hues

I composed the music for my friend's gallery opening. Her mixed media art is based on her trip to Iceland and its famous Blue Lagoon.

Hooks-Epstein Galleries is proud to unveil a virtual tour of Sandi Seltzer Bryant’s upcoming exhibition, Lagoon Hues. The work in Lagoon Hues draws inspiration from her time in Iceland and, more specifically, from her stay at the Blue Lagoon, a geothermal spa with striking milky blue waters due to the rich mineral content, set amidst vast lava fields. Viewers can envision travels through the glacial blues and rolling lava formations of Iceland or perhaps conceive of an entirely different circumstance as it relates to the individual.

Further enhancing the feel of this immersive event and engagement with each of Bryant’s pieces, the virtual tour includes an accompaniment of a musical score by prolific composer and librettist, Dr. Mary Carol Warwick, who is the protégé of noted opera composer Carlisle Floyd. Dr. Warwick’s works have been widely performed in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Singapore and include numerous commissions performed by the Houston Grand Opera.

Sandi Seltzer Bryant received her B.F.A. in Painting from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA, in 1974. Bryant's work has been exhibited in a number of collections nationally and internationally, including Texas, California, New York, Washington, D.C., the Netherlands, and South Korea. In February 2020, all media associated with Sandi Seltzer Bryant was archived by the University of Houston Libraries' Special Collections.

Sandi Seltzer Bryant's, Lagoon Hues, will open this Saturday, September 12, at 11 am.

Sounds Jewish, Doesn't It?

LADY, BE GOOD: Isabelle Ganz was particularly good on May 13 at the Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center of Houston in her lecture/performance "Sounds Jewish, Doesn't It?" Accompanied by Mary Carol Warwick, Ganz reprised her New York show exploring the influence of cantorial music, Jewish folksong, and Yiddish theater music on 20th-century Broadway songs by composers Jerome Kern, Irving Berlin, Harold Arlen, George Gershwin, Richard Rodgers, Leonard Bernstein, and Kurt Weill.

In addition to her role as classical composer, 2018 saw the release of Warwick's debut as co-producer along with Rock Romano for two bilingual (English/Vietnamese) CDs. Warwick also served as arranger, lyricist & pianist on several of the tracks on the following CDs which feature original songs by Vietnamese composer Tony Tran (aka Hoang Sa) and stunning orchestrations by Nhat Tao Vy.
